When Lives are Held Hostage by COVID-19

God formed a man out of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and the man became a living soul (Genesis 2:7). This happened on the sixth day of God’s creation and this made the human life the most precious compared to all creatures. And life is something that we should always be grateful for— one of the best gifts God has given us mankind. However, in this present situation, lives are being held hostage by the dilemma caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s been a year and five months since the deadly infection was first reported in China, which placed the whole world in a turmoil. The virus that put the people’s freedom at risk causing fear, panic, and anxiety to everyone. All are affected by the crisis— the highly privileged and the less fortunate, the strong and the weak, the young and the old. No one is exempted of the disaster. We are fighting everyday an invisible enemy who threatens our lives, making our future blur and uncertain.

Recently, the spike of cases in India has bombarded the news. India which is said to be one of the few countries that was able to manufacture a vaccine to provide immunity against the virus, now has reports of more than a hundred thousand of cases a day and the number just keep on increasing. Hospitals have already declared a shortage of hospital beds and a lack in the supply of oxygen tanks. Doctors and other medical practitioners are already exhausted. You can see people on the streets who are crying for their loved-ones who lost the fight against the virus and deaths are everywhere. This a picture of lives being held hostage by the virus. All become prisoners of fear and uncertainty, a proof that our capacities as humans are limited. We definitely need a Supreme Being whom we can turn to when things get out of control.

Some books in the Bible like Ezekiel, Jeremiah, and Exodus mentioned about plagues brought to awaken God’s children and to remind them to go back to God. What’s happening today can be likened to a plague that deeply strikes the entire human race and has brought uncertainty of the situation to when it will end. But this phenomenon also brought great awakening to every individual. Posted in social media and in the news are photos showing thousands of idols being thrown in the streets of India for not being able to protect them against the virus.

It is hurtful to accept, but this is candidly the truth. We cannot ask help from those things to protect, save nor heal us. Acts 4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Believing that there is only one Name that saves and heals: and His name is JESUS, the One True God, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The truth that will set us free from being held as hostage of fear brought by this pandemic. “That then the Lord thy God will turn thy captivity and have compassion upon thee (Deuteronomy 30:3)”. The Lord will take away thee all their sickness (Deuteronomy 7:15), He the Lord of Host will heal thee and thy land, if they humble and pray, if they seek his face and turn away from their wicked ways (2 Chronicles 7:14).

What more this plague can do to us? We may experience the first wave, second wave of Covid 19 and so on like what is happening in India but we must not wait for the wave of God’s wrath. Let us not be so complacent in having the vaccine’s availability and immunity. Instead, we must put our confidence in God who provides us the immunity against the power of darkness that this plague will bring. Nothing, no one could held us from the love of God, For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:35-39).

God made a promise in Exodus 6:6 ~ “Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments”. He is the only one who can redeem us from any bondage that’s holding us to move forward.

When your life is being held hostage by any circumstances, get rid of those things that hinder you and free from it to survive the obstacles in life with the help of the power of the Holy Spirit. And put our faith in our Lord God Jesus who can give certainty to things and who can free us from any form of bondage.

Galatians 5:1 ~ “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

God bless us all.
